Unit Title: Alphabet
Age Group: 6 to 7 years old
The specific skills that I am
targeting in this activity are knowledge and understanding of the students after
reading the “My “a” book”.
Objective:
At the end of the lesson, the
students will be able to recognize the word or words that begin with letter “a”
and can give another example of words that begin with letter “a”.
Materials Required: (All
the materials need for the lesson and the reinforcement activity)
- book: My “a” book
- Words that begins with letter written on the board or laminated words posted on the board
- Sheets of paper for the children to write their words example (if needed)
Setting: (How is the classroom set up
for the lesson and the activity?)
The setting will be as usual, the children
will be sitting on their own chairs facing to the board. Optional, to make it
fun and less tense I will make this activity like a game. We have to sit on
floor in a semi-circle with all the laminated words in the center facing down.
After reading the book, I will explain the rules of the activity and show to
them by starting to look for the words that begins with “a” and reveal the
words to them.
Procedure: (List the steps to accomplish
your goal and the reinforcement activity)
- Gather all the materials needed for the activity and place them facing down in the center of the room or post the laminated words on the board.
- Let the children sit on the floor in a semi-circle or let them stay on their chair. (optional)
- After reading the book, instructions will be given to the children. I will do the first guessing or finding words that begins will letter “a” and reveal it to the class. Then, I will ask one student to follow what I did. I will let him keep the words until all students can do the task.
- Then, ask the students to give me one word example that begins with “a”.
Implementing the Reinforcement Activity:
(List the steps to explain the activity)
If the objective above will be
met, the reinforcement activity will be word-picture matching that begins with
letter “a”.
- Prepare some pictures and laminated words for the children to match.
- Setting will be almost the same as the procedure above.
Developmental Focus: (What
other areas of development does this lesson and activity cover?)
Aside from cognitive skills,
this lesson and activity will also cover other areas of development which are
the fine motor skills, social and emotional skills.
Extensions: (How can you extend the focus
of the activity to encourage development in another area)?
I will ask the students about
the activity if they like it or not and if they want to have another activity
like this in the future. I will allow them to describe their emotions.
Explanations:
This lesson plan is prepared for
the children ages from 6 to 7 years old based from the book “My “a” Book” by Jane Belk
Moncure and Linda Hohag.
The
main objective of this activity is to teach the letter “a” which is the first
letter of the alphabet to the children. Teaching letter “a” is important as the
first step of reading. By collaborating the words that begins with “a” as
specified in the lesson plan it will be more concrete for the children and it
will become easy to understand and identify the letter. Thus, the children can
demonstrate or point out the exact words and they may be able to write another
words that begins with small letter a as well as words that has “a” on it.
