Classroom Decorations 2016 - 2017

Classroom Decorations 2016 - 2017

This year, I decided to change a little bit my classroom decoration and the listing of names in our classroom. The classroom theme is still about nature and so I reuse the tree and bee hives.

The happy monkey represents our classroom who occupied the children ages 2 to 3 years old.

The group of happy lady bugs represents the group of children in our care.
The group of happy butterflies also represent the children in our care.
The bees on the beehive are the names of the children with their birthdays.

Daycare Classroom Decoand the Meaning

This was my classroom decorations last year 2015 - 2016.

I got this ideas from online while searching for a daycare classroom decorations. I just forgot the site, sorry but I give credit to the owner of that picture who posted on that blog. Though the arts and crafts I made is different but the main idea is the same.

This is the meaning of my classroom decoration last year
I will enumerate what I did here:
  • The plant - represents our classroom
  • The two branches - represents two groups
  • Two flowers - the stigma (yellow part of the flower located in the middle) represent the teachers or the educators who taking care of the children in each group
  • The 8 petals on each flower - they are the children in their respective groups
  • 5 drops of water - the way we treats children in our classroom (Care, Respect, Patience, Love and Kindness)

If you’re happy and you know it

Transition time:
If you’re happy and you know it,
Clap your hands
If you’re happy and you know it,
Clap your hands

If you're happy and you know it
Then your face will surely show it
If you're happy and you know it
Clap your hands

If you’re happy and you know it,
stomp your feet (2x)

If you're happy and you know it
Then your face will surely show it
If you're happy and you know it
Stomp your feet

Repeat: the song but change to "shout hurray!"

Transition Time in Child Care

When we are talking about transition, it is the changes of events. In daycare or child care, it is the time when we have to follow the daily routine or schedule, changes from one place to the other and or moving things or toys from the container to the floor and back and forth, to stop the activity and moving on to the other activity.

What is transition time in daycare?

Image result for children playing at the daycare clipartsTransition is the most difficult time for the children particularly if they are engaged to the activity. It is also a challenging part of the educator perhaps the stressful parts of the day in the daycare or childcare. There is too much movement that it possibly gives confusion, other children may feel excitement and others may feel disoriented and lost.

Transition activity should be planned in advance and educator must be focused on. This is the time to impose discipline in order to minimize behavioral problems and chaos and to let the children know that they are still safe and secure whatever the changes of activity they may have.

Some suggested transition activity that can help in the daycare settings:
  1. Songs/Rhyme
  2. Finger plays
  3. Head Counting
  4. Hand Clapping
  5. Simon says and many more...

The Role of the Teacher in Early Childhood Development

Every one of us has role in early childhood development especially the parents and also the educator. Children need us to mold their minds and grow in all aspect of development for the future because they are our future. The role of an educator is a must to fill up the gaps in between some circumstances of what the parents are facing in the world today. They have to work hand in hand in order to obtain the desired goals to the learning and the child development specifically in the early education.

As an educator, I will implement a safe and sound environment for the children, these includes promoting a physical, mental and appropriate nutrition. Providing an emotionally and physically safe environment for young children is really a must with the partnership of their parents of course. A safe environment prevents the children from harm and she or he will be at ease in my care and trust will be developed. Good nutrition is really vital for children and so this is included in my agenda.

By promoting and implementing a good nutrition will encourage children eating good habits in the proper time and they will grow a healthy individual. Another important thing is I will make sure that all the activities provided are age appropriate and that will promote all the domains needed for them to grow up and can functions properly in the society.

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (INCLUDING SYNTAX, PRAGMATICS

1.
LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (INCLUDING SYNTAX, PRAGMATICS, ETC.)

Language and cognitive development are interrelated to each other, as well the other areas are interrelated with cognitive because it is processed in the brain. Teaching young children about language will help them communicate to others, give commands and understand as well as to be understood.

The Activity below is a suggestion on teaching very young children about language development.

Activities: Farm Animals March

Objective: To teach children how to put words together to make a simple sentence by talking, arranging words into a sentence and recognize the sequences.

Materials: plastic toy farm animals, a group of words or word (printed and laminated on a flash card)

Rules: After reading the book on the farm, I will also show some videos about farms. Then, I will ask the children’s attention. On the table, I will put toy animals on one side and words on the other side. I will ask each child to take 3 to 4 toy animals and arrange them as they are marching. Then, I will ask them a question of what they think animals are doing. The child will answer simple sentence of his/her opinion. Example; The animals are walking or marching. After that, I will let the child choose a word that describes the animals.

Explanation: This activity will boost their language skills because it made the children practice of answering the question in simple short sentence as well as by letting them describe the animals.

CHILDREN’S MEMORIES

1.    CHILDREN’S MEMORIES   (Memory)

According to Piaget that children are born with a basic mental structure which is including the memory. In between 7 to 9 months child realizes that object exists even if he cannot see it, this development is called object permanence which means that the memory is starting to develop.

Activity: Matching Shapes and Figures

The goal of the Activity: The skill I am targeting for this activity is memory by matching the shapes and figures. Children will recall and manipulate their memory skills in revealing which picture matches the ones that they recently touch.

Objective: At the end of the lesson the students will know how to match the pictures of the animals, vegetables and fruits the one that they previously touch.

Materials: Pre-cut felt paper or cardboard of different animals and figures paste on the card or on the paper (by two’s), Blindfold (handkerchief or any material), Board (optional, you can do this activity on the table or on the floor)

Rules: After giving the instructions of the game. Lay all the pre-cut felt paper or cardboard on the floor in random. Let them look all the shapes and figures for about 2 minutes or more. Flip or cover 1 of each shape. Do the blindfold. Ask one child to touch the figure and let the child say what kind of figure or shape he's looking. Remove the blindfold and let the child find the pair of that shape or figure from the cards. If the child finds the match, then he will continue playing and if not he will stop and choose one of his playmates to play. Then, repeat the procedure until all the children in the group will and matches all the figures.
Explanation: In my opinion the activity I mentioned above will help the children’s memory to develop because children will have to think and practice before they can memorize which cards and texture are the same.

   UNDERSTANDING SYMBOLS
Understanding symbols are important in literacy. We cannot read and understand without knowing and understanding the symbols. Letters are also called symbols which represent something, the same as the pictures or any arts. All of those have meanings. Therefore, young children should be exposed and thought about different symbols in the surrounding which is very helpful when they grow up
Activity: I am an Explorer
Objective: To let the children know and understand that symbols or print materials has meaning.
Materials: Traffic sign cards
Examples:

Signs and symbols on the farm
Examples:

And other symbols, that are useful in everyday life.

Rules: I will post all the signs and symbols on the board and on the wall. I will tell the children the importance of signs and symbols. I will divide the class into two groups, one will be on the traffic signs and the other will be on the farm signs. I will let them explore each symbol after the group will exchange the sides and explore. Then, I will ask the children one by one about their thoughts and ideas about their exploration.

Explanation: In my opinion, symbol exploration is a great activity for understanding symbols and sign because according to Piaget that exploration is a concrete operational which the child learns best.

The theories of play and cognitive development

CLASSIC THEORIES OF PLAY AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT (PIAGET AND OR VYGOTSKY)

1.     PLAY, AND GAMES (Social & Emotional development)
Cognitive developmental theorist like Piaget and Vygotsky believed that play is the  natural way of activities for children to explore, enjoy the freedom and learn naturally. Play will definitely promote social and emotional development for children through interacting, taking turns, sharing and helping other children in the group.

            Activity: Dressed Up (Theme: Farm)

Objective: At the end of the game, the children should be able to know the concepts of taking turns, and learn to interact their peers in a good manner.

Materials: dresses for farm, animal costumes, props

Rules: Introduce the activity to the children. Let them choose who they are in the play. Then after choosing, give them the costume and if they have their own they can use it. Let the children help you place the props in the middle of the classroom if the weather is bad, if not it is good to play outside. You can make this play as free play, meaning they can say and do anything they want and how they care the animals. You can make also as scripted. However, in this play I rather chose the free play because it is where they have freedom to learn naturally.

Explanation: Dressed up play is already proven as a fantastic way of promoting social and emotional development for children because they will learn how to take turns, sharing ideas if the play is free play. Children will also understand the feelings of others and even in caring animals.

Age level: 4 to 5 years old
1.     MATH (NUMBERS)

Applying and teaching mathematics in toddlers is very much important because it is part of our life. Theories vary their concepts, however Piaget pointed out that children need to know that math is part of their personal life and acquire the concepts of numbers in his developmental constructivism theory. He added that every normal child is capable of good mathematical reasoning, therefore, the earlier we teach math to the young children the better.

Activity: Counting Numbers 1 to 10

Objective: To teach children to count the numbers 1 to 10 and to be able for them to recognize from numbers 1 to 10 in a fun way.

Materials: cards with pictures of farm animals, vegetables and fruits with numbers printed on them from 1 to 10.

Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR-cfDsHCGA this counting music relates to the farm.

Rules: After reading the book On the Farm, I will introduce the activity Counting Numbers 1 to 10 to the children. This activity will accompany with the music to make it more fun to learn and to engage them in counting numbers. As well all know that music helps our both sides of the brain develop higher forms of thinking. While the music is on, I let the children follow the music and move along. Children can dance or any moves they want while singing the numbers.

Explanation: In my opinion, the activity I designed is great for preschoolers because it promotes free play and creativity where they can move or dance along with the music while singing the counting number song and most importantly, singing along numbers is very fun and engaging activity for children where they will learn without thinking that they learned.

Early Literacy Learning Domain: Text Comprehension

4.     Text Comprehension

Target: To help children recognizes texts based on the storybook On the Farm.

Explanation: Text comprehension

Activity: Questions and Answers

1.     What is the title of the book?
Answer: On the farm
2.     Identify the word versus picture

3.     What is the story about?
Answer. The story is about the farm.
4.     A

Early Literacy Learning Domain: Alphabet Knowledge

3.     Alphabet Knowledge

Target: To teach the children recognizes letters.

Explanation: Alphabet knowledge is believed to be the strongest predictor of later literacy, according to Utah State University professor CD, Jones (2012). The activity I made is to enhance the alphabet knowledge in a fun way. Children are very eager to know about alphabets and they love silly things. Therefore, making fun about letters is a fantastic way of learning and knowing them.

Activity: It’s Nice to know you Letters
To start this activity, I will let the children sing the alphabet song. After they sang, I will show a flash card with letters on them in different colors with the pictures of animals, fruits and vegetables on the farm and each child will pick letters and then say the letter they pick, what animals, fruits or vegetables that is the same letter they pick. I will also ask about what is the first letter is their name.
