The Role of the Teacher in Early Childhood Development

Every one of us has role in early childhood development especially the parents and also the educator. Children need us to mold their minds and grow in all aspect of development for the future because they are our future. The role of an educator is a must to fill up the gaps in between some circumstances of what the parents are facing in the world today. They have to work hand in hand in order to obtain the desired goals to the learning and the child development specifically in the early education.

As an educator, I will implement a safe and sound environment for the children, these includes promoting a physical, mental and appropriate nutrition. Providing an emotionally and physically safe environment for young children is really a must with the partnership of their parents of course. A safe environment prevents the children from harm and she or he will be at ease in my care and trust will be developed. Good nutrition is really vital for children and so this is included in my agenda.

By promoting and implementing a good nutrition will encourage children eating good habits in the proper time and they will grow a healthy individual. Another important thing is I will make sure that all the activities provided are age appropriate and that will promote all the domains needed for them to grow up and can functions properly in the society.

Language Development Theories: Behaviorism And Nativism

The theories of Language development had helped us to know and understand the concepts of how human language develops from birth until at the maturity level. Every theorist did their and research to explain further the patterns of development of language. There are several theories concerning this matter and that behaviorism and nativism are among of them.

According to the definition, behaviorism is the theory that human and animal behaviour can be explained in terms of conditioning, without appeal to thoughts r feelings, and that psychological disorders are best treated by altering behavior patterns. It is considered as a combine principle of philosophy and methodology. Behaviorism was started in the early twentieth century and founded by John B. Watson thus he became and considered as father of behaviorism. Watson’s beliefs that behavior can be determined, measured and conditioned through the interaction with the environment and the people around it.

What is nativism? It is the philosophical position or brain has certain innate structures present which play a role in the creation of knowledge. It is a theory that says that most of the basic skills are hard-wired in the brain at the birth. The psychologists who believe that humans are born with a set of abilities that help them learn other skills are Jerry Fodor, Noam Chomsky and Steven Pinker.

My Ideal arts Classroom

If I get hired as a creative arts teacher in an after school program, I would like to create my own ideal art classroom as part of the memorandum that I need to follow in order that my students will motivate to do arts as parts of their learning activity.

My ideal art room may have some characteristics that are different from the regular classroom. One important thing I may consider first is the four corner wall since this is the foundation for all learning activity. What I mean for this is the painting and accommodation; it should be comfortable, calm and inviting for children to enjoy and have fun while staying and learning in my art room. On the first wall, there will be a display art gallery of their finished product, so that it is easy for them to review and discuss their works. Aside from that, there will be also a display cabinet on the second wall, this will be for the architectural-sculptural artworks and it should be near the windows facing to the hallways where teachers and other students can see the display. My third wall will be the storage and lockers where I can store all my valuable things, arts stuff and or any materials involving arts and crafts. On the last wall, will be my smart board and some electrical outlets. Talking about storage, there will be a lot of shelves and drying racks. Includes with these are deep and wider drawer for large paper and posters if any. In my art room, every inch of space is considered valuable.

Lighting is a must in arts room. There will be lights on the middle of the room and if there is natural light coming from the window, curtains will be applied if necessary. Direct and zoned lighting is important so these options will be present in my ideal art room. Students will be comfortable putting their creative imagination into real piece of arts if light is very compelling.

Sink is also vital in arts room. This is where the students do their cleaning, like washing arts tools and hand. The location will be beside the corner of working counter space, it is large and resistant of acid or any chemicals. So much for that, I consider also the flooring that it is sealed and not carpeted. It is easy for the students to clean up the mess. In addition, there will be an exhausted fan to suck up dust or any undesirable odors or particles to make the atmosphere clean and breathe safely. Also cupboards, working counters are present, those will be located below the hanging work displays and beside the smart board.

All my art supply will be non-toxic, it is expensive but it is worthy to make sure that all students are safe. I even consider introducing a recycled product, in this way, we can save money and help the environment. Like, paper bag, cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, etc. can be useful in making arts.

High Quality Early Childhood Program

The Early Childhood Program is a curriculum intended for children from birth to twelve years of age. It supports the view of a good quality early childhood system that backs up each child’s progress in all areas of development. This program is supported by both federal and provincial agencies in order to improve the health and well being of our young children not only physically but also intellectually, emotionally and socially.
In Quebec, Early Childhood Education is very important because we value children as our most priceless assets. This outlook is affirmed by Nelson Mandela when he said, Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Hence, the province set up a  standard rule for all child care services to meet the needs of every child not only nurturing yet in giving them the best quality education.
A high-quality daycare is one that is able to recognize the children’s needs and to meet these demands for good measure. It is the establishment where educators will help and get involved with the children by taking into account the levels of their development. In order to achieve these goals, in Quebec, the following structural elements must be respected and implemented accordingly.
  • Educator - child ratio = by following the standard ratio of adult-child in the daycare is very beneficial to both educator and the children because it will ensure the quality interactions between the educator and the children.

Children's Needs Analysis

CHILDREN'S NEEDS ANALYSIS
4 to 5 years old Cognitive & Language Skills

Math Readiness and Reading

For three weeks observation, it came to my attention that Child 4 is new to the country and basically cannot talk nor understand the English language while Child 3 has the capacity to improve faster however, he needs motivation to do so. Most of the time, he doesn't like to listen especially in the circle time.

The chart below is the result of my observation from the children I chose in the daycare. The criteria or skills were all about Math Readiness and Reading. Based on the data collected, Child 4 is the most challenging child among the group. Child 3 shows difficulty in some skills while Child 2 and Child 1 showed the best and can accomplish and deliver the task to almost perfect.

Based on the information, data and analysis, the idea or the solution that came up to eliminate this problem is to plan an activity according to their needs focusing on child 4 followed with Child 3 without disregarding the skillful Child 1 and 2.

I introduced the "Alphagator" short story with my homemade interactive Alphagator book and I found it very engaging to them. Although, I didn't do it during the circle time (never had a chance to introduce, since I was then a stagiare,) but I had a chance at least introducing to them after their lunch, just before they go to take a nap.

The interaction and their excitement what happen next to the other letters made me more excite to and happy to help them achieve this goal. Child 4 learn new vocabulary where I asked her to repeat was really an amazing result.

The two children that need special attention basically wanted interactive materials so they can focus in learning.

Note: This observation was done during my stage 2

Man Who Planted Trees Play Dough

This was my midterm project in my Artistic Expression course in Early Childhood Education program. This 3D handcrafted man was made with home made play dough. Accompany with this project was an essay.

Here's my Essay

An Amazing Piece Of Arts

One of the most prominent competitions here in Montreal is a horticultural arts. This year's 2013 exposition theme is "Land of Hope" where the main objective is to let everyone know the importance of preserving the richness of life on earth. The Mosaicculture were displayed at Montreal Botanical Garden that lasted for three months. These sculptures were created using steel and aluminum forms that were wrapped in a metal mesh, filled with earth and planted with flowers ivies and grasses to provide textures and colors. Since I went to the museum late, there were only a few that I've seen and among of the arts that I totally amazed was "The Man Who Planted Trees".

It was a giant sculpture. This was created by the group of horticulturists in Montreal and a member of Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal, an organization who made the event possible. The sculpture is being honoured to a shepherd in a story who planted trees and bring back the life of the ruined landscape of the abandoned valley in France in the early 20th century. This amazing piece of art I’ve chosen consists of 800,000 individual plants according to the man I had spoken on the site and the flowers that were planted were mostly in the Alternanthera plants family with different colors from the hat to his back, arms, hands, legs except the neck line and in the middle of the vest which I thought were silver falls and silver mist plants. His beards were Stipa tenuissima plants, I am not really sure but what I am pretty sure, those were grasses.
